Limerick’s Tavern

“A wonderful bird is the pelican,
His bill can hold more than his beli-can.
He can take in his beak
Food enough for a week
But I’m damned if I see how the heli-can.” – Ogden Nash

The name Limerick’s Tavern reminds me of  12th grade English where we had to write our own bawdy limerick verses. So naturally when I  discovered Limerick’s Tavern in Alhambra, I was immediately intrigued: one part poetry and one part location. What is an Irish Pub doing in a predominately Asian community? Could it be any good? To answer that last question, the food was wonderful.

Limerick’s Tavern kindly sponsored a dinner for both Michael Walsh and I. Michael runs Eating Around So Cal, the biggest independent food blogger in Southern California.

Themed with a leprechaun green ceiling and wooden brown walls, the pub carries an authentic Irish pub/sports bar atmosphere. With wall-to-wall TV sports coverage, Limerick Tavern is a great place to watch NBA and post-season MLB Cubs vs Indians games.

We started the evening off with scotch eggs and sliders. We decided on the scotch eggs because it seemed to thematically fit with the Irish pub setting. I know that scotch eggs are usually eaten cold but for me personally, I enjoy them pipping hot out of the oven. The eggs have an elevated profile when the yolk is oozing hot.

The sliders had a slightly sweet brioche bun which caught me by surprise but it complemented the mild caramelized onions and beef patties well.  Great finger foods to enjoy a sports game with friends.

For the main, entree I had Scottish Salmon. The chef nailed the salmon. The salmon was tender, moist but not overdone. Concerning the non-fish portion of the dish, the medley of steamed vegetables were excellent. I particularly enjoyed how the the cherry tomatoes contrasted with the drier couscous.

That sums up my experience at Limerick’s Tavern. Here’s one more limerick just for fun.

“And let me the canakin clink, clink.
And let me the canakin clink.
A soldier’s a man.
A life’s but a span.
Why, then, let a soldier drink.” –Shakespeare
